Public Holidays

When planning a trip it's always a good idea to know the local holidays, to get an idea of if the museums and monuments are likely to be closed, and to make the most of any celebrations.

Public Holidays

  • New Year: January 1st
  • Martin Luther King Day: Third Monday in January. In honour of the Nobel Peace Prize winner who fought for racial equality.
  • Presidents' Day: Third Monday in February. In honour of all the presidents of the country, especially Washington and Lincon.
  • Memorial Day: Last Monday of May. A tribute to the soldiers who lost their lives in service to the nation.
  • Independence Day: 4th July. On the 4th of July 1776, 13 colonies declared themselves independent of the British Empire and became the first states in the USA.
  • Labor Day: First Monday in September.
  • Columbus Day: Second Monday in October, celebrating the arrival of Christopher Columbus to the Americas.
  • Veterans Day: 11th November. A Day to celebrate the end of the First World War and in honour of veterans.
  • Thanksgiving: The last Thursday of November.
  • Black Friday: The day on which Christmas sales begin. The day after thanksgiving.
  • Navidad: 25th December.
